Dr S.K.Som
Prof., Mech.Engg Dept. II

Sankar Kumar Som is a professor of mechanical engineering and is engaged in teaching and research over a period of more than thirty years. His area of interest is Thermal Science and Engineering and, in particular, the Droplet and Spray combustion. Prof. Som obtained his B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Calcutta University, and M.Tech and Ph.D from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He joined the Institute as a faculty in Mechanical Engineering Department in 1976. He has guided 16 doctoral students and has published more than 60 research papers in peer reviewed international journals.

His publications include invited review papers, chapters in research monographs, and papers of sole authorship. He has delivered key note address in several national and international conferences and workshops. He has coauthored a text book “Introduction to Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Machines” published by Tata Mcgraw-Hill Education, and has authored a text book “Introduction to Heat Transfer” published by PHI learning. Both the books are widely adopted by various Indian Universities and Institutes in undergraduate and postgraduate courses of mechanical engineering. He has served as Principal Investigator and Chief Consultant in several Industrial projects with different government and private organizations. In fundamental research, he has made pioneering and significant contributions on (i) Thermodynamic irreversibility in combustion processes in relation to efficient utilization of energy resources, and (ii) Theory of air core formation in swirl spray pressure atomizing nozzles. Some of his major contributions in the frontier areas of technology pertain to the development of software codes for (i) Ignition and combustion in gas turbine engine, (ii) Ignition in upper stage cryogenic rocket engine, and (iii) Thermofluid modeling of recaway zone in maximizing blast furnace productivity. He was the president of 56th congress of Indian society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics,2011. He has served as a member of various expert committees at national level. Prof. Som is Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Sciences, India and the Institution of Engineers, India. Prof. Som has served the administration of Indian institute of Technology Kharagpur in various capacities as Chairman, GATE, Foreign Students’ Advisor, Head, Mechanical Engineering Department, Dean, undergraduate studies and Director(officiating) at present. A curricula review committee under his chairmanship revised both undergraduate and postgraduate courses at IIT Kharagpur in providing a modern shape of the curricula with flexibility, interdisciplinarity and balanced components of basic sciences, biosciences, environmental sciences and engineering sciences. He has been instrumental in streamlining the academic administration of undergraduate studies at IIT Kharagpur and putting up the information base on ERP platform.
